Featuring a diverse landscape of rugged granite outcrops, sprawling rainforest and pristine coral beaches, Fitzroy Island is an idyllic place to explore, picnic and bird watch, just 45
minutes ferry journey from Cairns. The island has a rich history and was “discovered” and named by Captain Cook in 1770. It has since served as a quarantine station for Chinese people on their way to the Palmer River Goldfields in 1876, and was later used as part of an Aboriginal fruit and vegetable growing mission.
Today, it’s one of the best places in Queensland to spot native plants, birds and animals in the wild, especially reptiles, which have become the island’s predominant predator thanks to its relatively isolated location.
